I presented "Carnival of Love" as an essential part of a summer reading program to strengthen struggling students' reading skills. As students engaged with the story, they formed strong connections with specific characters, such as Benny and Zoe, enhancing their reading experience. Maria, the central character, not only stood out for her uniqueness but also profoundly resonated with the students and me, reflecting our identities. Ernestia Fraser skillfully conveyed her past experiences through a 109-page narrative, delivering a powerful tale of resilience in the face of adversity. The portrayal of a large, interconnected family unit cohabiting under one roof, relying on each other for support, served as a poignant embodiment of the core values of Bahamian culture, with even the elements of gossiping being embraced and enjoyed by some students. However, the most poignant aspect of the narrative was the portrayal of the trials and tribulations experienced by Maria, effectively conveying to the students that these experiences are not isolated but universal. This book is a valuable asset for young readers, providing literary enrichment and invaluable life lessons. Furthermore, it holds significant value for parents who may doubt their achievements or efforts; I hope that Maria's letter to her parents serves as a poignant testament to the contrary, showing that children always appreciate their parents' efforts.

It gives me great pleasure to post this review of โ€œCarnival of Loveโ€ by Ernestia Fraser in her guest book. Carnival of Love is a delightful and honest glance into Bahamian life from the aspect of a family who has struggled economically and in many other ways, but whose pride and perseverance has taken them way above many others who might have had more opportunity. Carnival of Love is so well written with such descriptive prose. The author possesses a remarkable insight into human nature. She cleverly uses the senses of sight, sound, touch and even taste and smell to effectively draw us into her colourful scenes. She portrays many aspects of Bahamian culture, including the humorous and not so humorous. She shows warm, binding family relationships and what it means to be part of a large family with many siblings. It is clear that Maria truly loves her parents, brothers and sisters, continually trying to reconcile everyone. I enjoyed every part of this warm memoir and highly recommend it as a great read!
