I first discovered Ernestia Fraser through her memoir “Carnival of Love” as it was a part of the BGCSE syllabus. Upon reading it the first time, I fell in love with the plot of the book. Upon reading it the second time, I fell in love with the writing itself. I feel as though it was a very accurate depiction of what a lot of Bahamian children possibly go through when their parents go through a divorce; a literal world and life-changing experience that no one can understand. I always thought about how strong she was for being able to put out such a piece, glutted with the hardcore truth despite how others might feel about their depiction in the book. As a writer myself, when I think about writing about my life story, I always think back to the first memoir that I wrote and thoroughly enjoyed. In reading her poetry collection, Shallow Waters, it was also another aspiring piece that I come across from Fraser, as this was during a time where I took her Creative Writing class and got really interested in the genre of poetry. They paid homage to her home, and I wish to do the same thing a couple years down the line into my writing career. They were also relatable and intriguing and I had manage to finish the collection in a matter of 1-2 days. Furthermore, I took pleasure to real her novel “The Island of Shelbie Mott” that follows a very passionate young girl named Shelbie and her life growing up in a world where there was hardly a need for technology. I feel as though this novel taught me a lot about the time before mine as I never experienced the climbing of trees or that sense of neighborhood closeness with the other children around. I enjoyed this novel and the characters that each chapter represented. Ernestia Fraser proves herself to be a well-rounded author. I cannot wait to read what has yet to come!
